| | | New Comp For College Alright when it comes down to computer software and what to get, i am slightly noobish. right now i am gathering as much info as i can as to what i should get in a new comp. i look up the Dell build a computer site to get some easy setups that i can have shipped to me, but they suck. Basically here is my situation, i have 2.5 gigs of ram, a 40gb and an 80gb hard drive, and an Nvidia 6600 GT graphics card. Im hoping that i can build my own Comp and use the ram and extra hard drive from my old one.
So my question is: with a price range of below $1,000, what video card, Processor, and any other such things should i get so that i can play all of the new games coming up that support Direct X 10 and still have enough cash in my pockets to buy these games?(i.e. Crysis, Spore, C.O.D. 4, ect.)

| | Here is the main problem Punisher. Most mboards (motherboards) that have a pci-e x16 slot (for the 1337 gfx cards that will do dx10) run off DDR2 800 or better memory. If your ram isn't DDR2 you are SOL. Second, meh, you can get a giagantor hdd for like 60 bucks. But when choosing a mboard you gotta make a choice between intel and amd. Right now intel is pwning amd and looks to continue this trend in the future. So with that in mind you should look at a socket LGA775 board and probably something along the lines of an E6600. Alot of us 1337 machiners have one and have overclocked the balls off it. As for a gfx card... well the order highest to lowest is as follows 8800 Ultra, 8800 GTX(768), 8800 GTS(640), 8800 GTS(320), and finally the 8600 GT(256).
Basically those are the best dx10 cards out right now. There is an ati dx10 coming out but i havent heard alot about it so im gonna ignore it. If you have questions find me on vent and ill help you build it piece by piece if you want, and i'll try and work with you on budget (if you have one). I will now resume my lurking.

| | | well, drop $200 for those games, so we're at 800 bucks. I hope your ram is ddr2.
quadcore mobo for 160, core 2 duo proc e6600 for 266, that leaves 374. i assume you can scrounge up a case, but we still need a 750w psu, that's 160, which leave us 214 for the video card.
With that we go mid-range and get the 8600gt video card for 150 -180 bucks. we can always upgrade later. that leaves us 60 bucks for a nice mouse.
to sum up:
quad core mobo 160
core 2 duo e6600 266
750w psu 160
8600gt 150
My recommendations are to wait about a month for more mid-range dx10 cards and the processor price drops.

I'd hate to drop a lot of money on a PSU and find out later it's not enough power, though, esp if I go SLI at a later date.

| | | More money saved if you go with the E6350 which you can OC to E6600 speeds on stock cooler. oh and prices will be dropping alot through out the ongoing months with the new releases for ATI and nVidia(personally i like nvidia) are coming out too

| | max power's not as big a concern its better to buy an effective/efficient power supply over a 90000000watt beast.
and i like playing with numbers
