Ubuntu

Has anybody ever used it. Me and a friend are thinking about turning an old XBOX into a mini pc. And we dont want to put Windows on it. I always wanted to try Ubuntu. Any advice??

I've used it on and off. On my PC and just PCs I felt like setting it up on. It's great for day to day use. I've also set Wine up on it, which was ok but nothing like gaming on Windows.

Ubuntu is a breeze to set up and get going, so it's definitely user friendly if you're new to Linux.

I've played with Ubuntu it's based off Debian. Debian's apt-get kicks booty

Ubuntu adds a lot of user friendliness

I hope when you say mini-pc, you mean mini-and-completely-useless-pc.

Processor speed is extremely slow and it's very, very limited in RAM. I don't think the Gnome environment will run well with the amount of RAM. You'd be better off using nothing but the console. Perhaps a framebuffer if it's supported on the XBox.

I like TWM or Blackbox in those cases. (The original Blackbox that was minimal and fast.)

is wine hard to use?? or does it take alittle to get used to. (Im a noob at linux/ubuntu). And where do i download it?
I looked in the WineHQ and there alot to choose from and i dont know what to download. Wine HQ - Wine Binary Downloads <-- Link. Im assuming its the one all the way at the bottom. Or does Ubuntu come with it???? so confuzorzd

If you're not familiar with the console at all you may not be prepared.

Wine has gotten simpler over the years and it now has a GUI to set it up with. Installation of stuff should be as simple as running wine <appname>. However, there are plenty of tweaks to be done and lots of programs look terrible and have graphical issues. A lot of things just plain won't work.
