The problem comes when you are replacing the hard drive and motherboard.
I've tried it twice and it wouldn't boot. There may be a way, but I'm unaware of it.

Try a repair (overlay) of XP with your Windows install disc.

I'll give that a try whenever I decide to upgrade to AM2.

I rarely replace an entire system, usually keep at least the boot drive and just install the new drivers.

Is it possible to update a VAIO? I want a new processor (Core2 Duo) but I dont think my motherboard would accept it. Would it be possible to change just that and keep everything else? I've taken it to computer stores but no one wants to do it cause it's a VAIO, they tell me it's custom made.

You can always swap out a processor, even on proprietary boards, but only if the board can take it. You'd have to get the motherboard model, and check the specs.

You'll need to find the motherboard model. It's usually printed somewhere on the middle of the board. Do a google search for specs. If it doesn't support core2duo then see if there was a bios update to allow that but since it's sony I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Actually I think it is possible that it doesn't support C2D, the only way to find out would to be to run CPU-Z and find out what board he has. I know for certain that the early 975's couldn't run C2D (or I'd have a AW8-D rather than a 965-S3), but I'm not 100% on the 945's.
