personally I'm torn between the HP, MSI and Asus...all have fatal flaws to me in some regard...the HP has the screen resolution I want (1280), but the VIA processor kills it for me...the MSI is probably the best all around performer, but then there's a battery life issue (as compared to say the Eee)...then there's the Asus, which has really done their best to confuse the market with so many models, and while their build quality and battery life seems to have hit the sweet spot with the latest model (1000), the price point is a concern...

at over $500 for any of these (and some way over 500), I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase (considering my only current computer is also a notebook)...I'm anxious to see what Dell brings to the table, and how it effects the other models, and I think I'll still wind up getting one, but my timeline has always been as a compliment to my new desktop build, which will come with nehalem...

didn't the VIA processor compare better power-wise, but not battery life?

If I can score a 4-6 hour battery, a 2-lb weight limit (with battery), a full-power system (Core duo/amd x64), a full hard drive, and sub-$1000, I'd be pretty happy. There's a few models like that, but none that I really trust truly could go 6 hours on battery.

Plus I have too many notebooks and computer to justify another one. But I'm trying.

Dell mini now available for $349/$399, which is really the price we were all hoping for on all the other ones.

It's an 8.9", so only for the super portable people.

well, $449 with 1gb of RAM. but XP would do fine on 512megs for $399.

very nice machine. though i'm sure it will get crucified for 16Gb of HD space, albeit SSD goodness.

i'd buy it for work if I didn't have my Air. its a work machine, nothing more.

it's a great price for 16gb SSD. I'm sure it's the slower SSD, but it cuts down on weight.

the dell mini is probably the best one for a college student, not sure on it's battery life yet though (but the 4-cell should be okay)...while it's not my favorite, I hope that it manages to bring down the prices of its competitors...

I think I'm still liking the 499.00 120 gig wind the best.

I wonder how long the 4-cell would last in one of those...

I would guess around 2.5-3 hours for the 4 cell, if you're lucky.
