Maxing out CPU choice - AMD TL series question

I have the TL-50 in my laptop, and I want to bump that up as far as possible.

From what I understand, the S1 socket is fine for all the TL series up to the TL-68, but somewhere along that line it went from 90nm to 65nm process. I would guess that means a BIOS update?

So, my question is, how far can I bump up without a bios update, and how far can I update with one?

Well, you find a 65nm chip for that socket and youll be hard pressed to come out spending less than 350 bucks Ill tell you that.

TL-56 are still 90nm and not too insanely expensive.

So far as bios updates im not entirely sure... you know coffee you should never spend money on some old piece of technology just cuz youre afraid to move onto something new and.... omg its just too much I cant keep typing

I'm just not sure you can drop in a 65nm cpu into one originally used by a 90nm, even though it's the same slot (s1), without a bios upgrade. Or maybe you can.

So flash the bios then order the best chip you can afford.

slap it in there... i mean there was literally one north bridge ever used for the dam socket (if memory serves) its GOT to work with the latest bios... without a bios flash, who can say

Yeah most laptop manufacturers have a list of CPU's that are supported in their laptops.

so customer support gets back to me and says I can use a TL-64 ($186). I asked if I could use a tl-68, which is the same socket and process (65nm), but they didn't mention it, so it looks like I can. the TL-64 is a decent upgrade from the TL-50, but not sure it's worth the $186.
