Router Problems

Yeah, so I have two problems in two different areas. I will get into my own later tonight, but for now, I seem to be using the internet via router. The owner wants to password protect it. However, I can't seem to access any router via 192.168.1.1 or the modem 192.168.1.254.

The owner thinks he messed something up. Is the best way to just reset the modem from the modem itself.

Have you been automatically assigned an IP address when connecting to the router? If so, the router's IP address will be whatever your Default Gateway has been automatically set to.

I wouldn't know how to check for that though. I found a website that tells you how to check the ip config and all and has a few other suggestions. I'm going to try those as soon as I can.

I'm not sure where you'd find it in Mac OSX, but in Windows XP you can go Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right click the connection and select Status -> look on the Support tab. Or use ipconfig in the command prompt.

Mac should probably let you use ifconfig in the terminal, but you'd need to run route to find the default gateway. I'm basing that assumption on what I'd do in Linux.

Although I'm on my mac, I will be using a vista machine to do this. I'm thinking as of now the best route is probably going to be to just reset the router.

I've just been looking briefly at here: Can’t access 192.168.1.1 on my Win XP Network using Linksys - ISP

and here: How do I properly set up a Linksys router for use with a Westell modem? AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ - dslreports.com

I haven't done a google search for vista or mac yet though.

Exactly what I was thinking...If it's a user problem then I would just perform a hard reset and set it up from scratch. I used to do that atleast once every other week because my router & dsl from GAY Ntelos hated each other ! !
