Windows Compatible Recording Software

I've been writing music and lyrics and stuff for a couple years now, just playing around with it, but I've decided to really get serious with it now. Can anyone tell me any good music recording/mixing software for Windows? I'm looking for something with which I can record and mix tracks with a good MIDI input for electric guitar and the works. Preferably with a drum machine of some kind. Teaching myself the drums is a slower process than I'd hoped. Thanks for the help.

Well i did this for when i play sax and stuff.

You can go and get yourself a copy of Cakewalk Sonar.

Works pretty nicely and its easy to use.. check it out.

I currently have Sonar 6 Producer edition.

Well, I'll probably want something with which I can do plain audio and MIDI too, like GarageBand, but since I'm on PC, I just need an equivalent of that. I'll check out Sonar are Project 5 and see if either of them fits my budget/scope of use.

I used to work with a bass player who really like project5 with his firewire Maudio breakout box.

I've been using Soundforge 9 for MP3 editing and multichannel audio files. Patch together various guitar clips to form a layered tracks. It' s good for simple stuff.
