Was going to say could be a bad hard drive sector, did you run dskcheck?

Also malware, while always a possibility seems like a little further down the list.

Did you also try removing one memory stick (or more if you've got 4) then booting with 1, run memtest if it does boot stable

its not malware or a virus. I can boot fine with the bad hard drive disconnected. I'm running Knoppix right now and can access all my files fine. Looks like I'll be handling this the long way.

My HD got corrupted a couple years ago. IIRC Partition magic helped recover some stuff. I have also heard of putting it in the freezer then getting stuff off of it right away.

Yeah drive recovery is expensive as shit but going back to your original problem. A bad hard drive will cause windows to freak out and windows will keep trying to access it which will cause windows to take forever to start up and run very slow. (but i'm guessing you figured that out on your own) Good luck on recovering your music (out of all my files that is the one group of files I do not want to lose...fuck everything else) You didn't happen to have a backup somewhere did you?

Tried that before...didn't work so I wouldn't waste your time (and btw it was a failing hard drive in which nothing important was on it so I didn't care either way)...and I was referencing the freezer thing...
