I accidentally kicked my external hard drive before. It started clicking like crazy. I tried everything to fix it. Finally I wrapped it in a bag and threw it in the freezer over night. The next day I hooked it up, and it worked long enough to copy off all of my data. I was pretty amazed. I've yet to get it to work again on other drives though.

zomg, left my PC on overnight to copy files and its still copying!!!

the hard drive I'm guessing is really fucked since the transfer rates are down to 563 KB/sec.

Just to update, I bought a 500GB hard drive which by chance came formatted in FAT32, so that means i didn't have to format it myself. Knoppix can only write to FAT32 drivers. So I just setup all the files I want to copy from my bad hard drive to the external. Looks like it's gonna take a couple DAYS. ha

Damn, just expect some file corruption/loss obviously. I was pretty surprised tho how much of my stuff was corruption free after expecting to get like 1 good file.

Not to long ago i ran into an instance in which i was able to freeze a hard drive which allowed me to read / transfer data off of it at high speeds...

After the hard drive started to warm up the transfer speeds started to slow way down... I put an ice pack around the drive and the speeds picked back up...

Its something you could try if you feel brave

I don't feel brave at all. This hard drive is my internet life from 1998 till now...
