What's the benifit of running games on a higher screen resolution

I have tried running games on different screen resolutions and found hardly any difference between most resolutions. Anything higher that 1024x768 on my sager 8790 is not in wide screen perspective while playing desert combat. So is there any benifit with higher resolutions? and what of the screen mhz too does that matter really on an lcd screen? again I tried different setting and noticed no difference.

echo

pay attention to the jagged lines on the counter of buildings/structures/people at a low resolution than look at it again on a higher resolution

typically things look smoother/better onhigh reslution

however there are some things u can do to enhance that like antialiasing and antiscopicfiltering which enhance all that w/o jumping up in resolution

Rmember though that visual quality at a certain resolution is dependent on screen size. Hence theres typically a 'sweet spot' beyond which you don't gain much by increasing resolution for a certain screen size.

As rincewind said earlier, a higher resolution will help make jaggies look better. Of course Anti-aliasing helps, but that is usually a huge performance hit.

a lot of the time, the HUD and text scale with the resolution, so a higher resolution will get you smaller clutter on the screen.

Everything looks sharper because there's more space to define details.

Take this for example: Taking a picture with a 1Megapixel camera and taking a picture with a 5 megapixel camera. Then blow them both up into a 10ft x 10ft poster. The 5 megapixel picture is going to look clearer of course

You also get to see more! Imagain playing an fps and getting to see 30% more of what is happening around you then your opponent? Isn't that a good advantage?

but it does use up more gpu power. i bet that sony would be pretty exhausted running at its high resolution. makes text hard to read as well.

well, some games just make it plain hard.

Like, America's Army, I play at 1280x1024. oh god the text is tiny and in the corner. Plus lots of the text is blue... like dark blue. and many maps are black. small blue on black = DEATH TO EYES :P

Counter-strike had that problem too when the patch came out to allow 1600xwhatever
But they fixed that.

A lot of modern games take into consideration high resolutions and scale the text to reflect that. Some still don't, but they're not that common.
