| | | Netbooks: A Buyer's Guide From MSN Quote:
The term netbook, coined by Intel, conveys little useful information about this category of machines. Sure, they all have wireless networking, but so does every other laptop. What the term originally helped to identify was a class of small, ultralightweight, cheap-as-dirt mobile PCs.
Netbooks are tiny – usually between half and two-thirds the size of a garden-variety laptop – and they typically weigh around 2.5 pounds. With their cool, slim designs, they outclass some fancy ultraportables. And best of all, these diminutive laptops start at around $200 (in some cases $100, when purchased as part of a mobile broadband promotional deal).
| This is a very good read if you're in the market for a netbook. There are a lot of good suggestions on makes, models, specs and more.

| | | Surprisingly, MSN actually wants to steer you away from Linux models!

| | | the average buyer (in the world, not on this forum) has no business using Linux.
and I mean the average Walmart, email using, pron surfing, used-to-windows-XP user.

| | | I agree, it's getting better though.
The versions of linux that ship on netbooks is unusable garbage anyway (on the eeepc at least). The average user doesn't even know what an OS is or how to install a new one, especially without an optical drive. |

I've been expecting a Linux based appliance type computer Ultra low cost for non-techies. All it will do is turn on and auto run a browser. In this application I think Linux would be great.
My recommendation to not-very techie friends is Windows all the way as they always have some app they want to run. | |
