How could you pay $50 for a mouse pad?

I could not see spending even $30 on a mouse pad, maybe $20. What's the deal? What is so great about a $50 pad? Is it the surface? I don't even have a mouse pad, I just use my desk. I have an Intellapoint and it works fine. I was thinking about buying a hard one so a could sit on the couch or outside and play games or whatever. Now after seeing the price I think I’ll just make one. What is so bad about just putting your mouse on a wood desk? I know back in the day they said to put your mouse on a pad so that dust won't get into where the track ball is. With an optical mouse it doesn't matter it can read on any flat surface and no dust to worry about. I was going to make one out of wood to match my laptop desk that I made. I don't mean to sound inflammatory or pick any fights I just cant understand it.

So is there anything wrong with making it out of wood?
Or maybe you could recomend a hard one $15-$25

Well some mouse pads are good, but are defenitly overpriced. I only have the fUnc pad because I got it free from Alienware. Mostly gamers buy the expensive ones, but you should use something that is best for you.

The only reason people buy expensive mousepads if for gaming. When you begin to move your mouse and when you are moving it, you should feel very little resistance and friction. The more expensive the mousepad, usually the less resistance you feel.

Also for programs that require PRECISION movements.

I'm with the Alienware guys...the func pad works fine and was free. Actually surprised me, because I was use to freebie mousepads.
