IE8 seems to have terrible performance when opening new tabs. I went to the forums here and used middle click to open all the subforums. Each middle click would hang the browser itself for three to four seconds, then the tab would appear and load. The browser itself just has a very slow, clunky, and unresponsive feel to it.

doesn't do that at all for me, maybe it's your system? I'll do some testing later

Not sure. I thought maybe it was because the first run of the browser. The freezing seems to go away after having the browser open a longer time and visiting more sites, but whenever I first start the browser, navigating to pages with middle-click is a pain at first. I've been testing by just going to imk.cx and then middle-clicking on the screenshots link. It freezes the browser for 3-4 seconds and then opens the tab and loads the page. (It's not just my site that does it; it seems to be any site that I initially go to.)

    System is Vista Ultimate x64.

Anyway, here are some JavaScript performance results:

    Chrome v2.0.170.0 = 983.4ms +/- 3.2%
    Safari v4.0PB (WebKit r41759) = 1139.8ms +/- 1.3%
    Firefox v3.6a1pre = 1551.2ms +/- 6.3%
    Firefox v3.1b3 = 2103.2ms +/- 3.7%
    Opera v9.64 = 4441.2ms +/- 6.8%
    Internet Explorer v8.0 = 6183.0ms +/- 1.5%
    Internet Explorer v8.0 (64-bit) = 6383.8ms +/- 0.6%

IE8 is still the slowest of the bunch, but it's much better over IE7's 22000+ms.

    Edit:
I just captured two videos showing the differences I experience between Chrome and IE8.

In the IE8 clip the mouse looks unresponsive, but that's just in the video. The mouse was smooth while middle-clicking all of the links. This doesn't affect the actual time it takes to open the tabs and such; that is reflected correctly.

    Chrome (689kb)
    IE8 (632kb)

    Edit 2:
Looks like it's not just me. I'm talking to a lot of people on IRC and other people I know and I'd say about half of the people I ask have the same problem.
