    Illuminatus!!!! Illuminatus!!!

Firefox users flip out over sneak MS add-on • The Register

    Silent, but deadly annoying

Firefox fans are up in arms after a recent Microsoft software update silently installed a Firefox extension that is difficult to remove.

Users agreeing to install a service pack for the .NET Framework (NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1) through Windows update were also pushed a Firefox add-on that is potentially difficult to remove once applied. This add-on - Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant - enables .NET apps to be installed with one click.

Annoyances.org, a Windows gripes site, reports that the update slaps IE-style behaviour on Firefox users, specifically the "ability for Web sites to easily and quietly install software on your PC".
    UNCLEAN!!! UNCLEAN!!!

UNCLEAN CREATURES OF HELL!!! GO BACK TO WHENCE YOU CAME!!!

if you're enough of a geek that this bothers you, you're enough of a geek to remove it.

That's true Coffee, but still. Is MS's strategy to improve their own browser to a level that it lures users back? No. Instead they stoop to putting something in the background to reduce the effectiveness of the competition.

Question now is: will Mozilla sue over it?

No thanks, Microsoft! You see what they did! They had all these huge announcements at E3, played ALAN WAKE on stage, L4D2!! They distracted us from the truth, all the while injecting our computers with POISSSONNNN. they're no better than pediatricians who distract you from the needle, then JAB you in the arm and make you cry! EVILLLL!! EEEEEVIILLLLLL!

This is an optional software update from MS. The specifics of the update are available for viewing prior to installation. If you don't want the update don't download and install it.

If you want to get right down to it, the folks over at Mozilla did a halfassed job with allowing FF to install .Net based applications - if they had done it right to begin with MS wouldn't be coming behind them to clean things up.

Little birds out there are saying that the update also seems to affect Chrome (unconfirmed).

If it is in the agreement when you install .net 3.5, then no one should be complaining.

Well, when it comes to M$ agreements its either you agree to install it or the new stuff you want to run won't run.

then be a Linux or Apple guy. You may not like the choices, but you have them.

I'm not saying MS did it the right way (and they fixed it anyway, so I'm not sure what the big deal is still), but it's not a big deal.

edit: evidently, I like the words "big deal"
