Google Music Service Launch Imminent? [Updated]

Looks like the big G is going to be competing in the audio landscape against their one-time buddies at Apple. Or at least that's what the rumor mill is saying today.

Google will soon launch a music service, we’ve heard from multiple sources, and the company has spent the last several weeks securing content for the launch of the service from the major music labels. One source has referred to the new service as Google Audio.
Apparently they already have this service, or at least some iteration of it, active in China. How big of a blow would it be for Apple's iPhone business model were this to sync up nicely with Android 2.0? I'm guessing that's the idea.

Update from MacRumors. It seems to be legit and will be announced on October 28th, but will not be a 'store' of sorts:

MediaMemo provides additional information, noting that the service will reportedly be called "One Box" and will be a search service offering users content previews and directing them to sites where music can be purchased, not a full-fledged iTunes Store competitor

Depends entirely on implementation. Mp3? Just for android? Sync with existing mp3 players? Cost? Streaming?

Good move by them, though. Lots of droids coming out soon.

I think there might be a need in the subscription area, if that's what they end up doing.

I had Napster until they dropped out of that business. I tried Yahoo and couldn't get it to run on two different computers.

Zune works good and is the only one worth a crap right now.

If they are only going to sell mp3's then meh those are available everywhere.

Yeah big question is does Google follow through or do they give up like they did with their video service a few years ago. yes they had a video service. I read the press release for its introduction and the one for its demise, never saw a review or anything else. Then again back then Google had a crappy PR firm handling their stuff.

this could be awesome. With how long they've spent keeping this under wraps here, there's a good chance it could be something android users will become quite fond of. That being said, this'll be just one more reason for me to buy an android phone.

After the update I'm going to with meh. I don't need a search service to find music. I can go to itunes, Amazon, etc.

This could be pretty bad for iTunes, not complete destruction, but a big chunk of market share. If it recognizes my Zune (which it probably will), I'll definitely take a look at it.

Yeah it works good, but its not the only one worth a crap. Winamp and VLC are probably the lightest most universal media players. Zune and iTunes are pretty heavy programs.

I think the dog meant for subscription services. If you want to buy mp3s off Amazon, there are lots of good media managers
