I'm suggesting they could use subsidiaries and shells, continue making bucks in China and not have "Google" specifically doing business in China. GE officially and directly does not do business in Iran, but at the end of the day, they have money from Iran in their accounts and their products are in Iran.

Google China Employees Given Holiday Leave, Networks Being Scrutinized

A tipster informs us that an IM conversation with a friend who works for Google China in their Shanghai offices has revealed that all Google China workers have been given holiday leave. Bloomberg published a similar report, adding that the company has intensified internal security testing of its networks following complaints that its website had been attacked by local hackers.

While Google denies other reports stating that its China employees would effectively stop working today and that business in China is ‘operating as normal’ according to Bloomberg, the IM conversation that we were forwarded reveals that Google China workers no longer have access to company systems. The fact that Google employees are seemingly unable to log onto internal systems could be a result of the internal security tests and scans, but Google has apparently also asked China employees to ‘relax at home’ for an unspecified time

there's quite a bit of investor backlash about the economic impacts of this bold move.

also, people are pontificating that Baidu is poised to become the next global internet icon and that perhaps Google is doing this to show the world that they won't be bullied by anyone for any share of market.

i don't have an issue with Google being there, or even censoring their search - that's their deal, their business. Just don't pretend to be some benevolent corporation in the meantime, or when someone bruises your reputation on security.

This is likely more about bad publicity on breaching Google's safety than anything else. If you think that Chinese hackers can break into google whenever they want, are you going to use GoogleDocs, gmail, and any other cloud product they put out?

i read an article that put it nicely into perspective. it was something along the lines of "why are we applauding them for pulling the trigger after four years? it's like patting a guy on the back for finally putting an end to beating his own wife after years".

I'll disagree there. IF they're experiencing a change of heart, I'll back them 100%. I have my doubts that's really happening, but again, IF so, I applaud them. I'm all for the idea of redemption everywhere, if it's sincere.
