“This is the next level or elevation of the cellphone,” he said of the iPhone. “Not because it’s better or necessarily better than your Blackberry … but this runs a real computer operating system” and therefore can offer full-featured e-mail software on the go.

I know you're an "on-the-go" monster user, Craig, so I don't debate the value of that to you. for me, not worth it, I can do email on the PDA already.
I guess if you lump the iPhone into the same boat as the UMPCs, you have a good value - cellphone plus PDA, almost a full computer instead of a limited mobility device like some of the other PDAs. I still think the keyboard is going to kick your ass.
I'm still trying to realize the value, though, in a device that has been done before. (not including the neato factor Apple brings). The interface will be cool, the touchscreen new, and I'm sure the accessories will be plenty.
But there still won't be real 3rd party apps that run ON your iPhone (natively, without connection to a server). You will be typing out emails on a touchscreen, which, no matter how sensitive and incredibly responsive, will be a chore.
Coffee (email): Hey, Craig, what's up? The forums are down, can you check them?
Craig: (iPhone) orly?! I R chkng frmz nw k thkz?
just a guess though.
