meh. make the argument without condescension. Alienating your audience on the first sentence isn't the smartest approach.

sure. you can use a car for a boat if you see fit, but don't expect warranty service when it sinks. Not sure where you're going here.

In my mind this smacks of having your cake and eating it.
already made the bucks? and? you agreed to the both the hardware and the software and the contract when you made the purchase. God forbid you actually live with it.

see the above "you signed the contact". Unless Steve forced you, I'm pretty sure this is your fault.

not if no one buys it. If you don't like the arrangement, don't buy it. With no customers, they'll adjust to customer demands as shown through customer purchases of other products. It's a cool system I like to call "capitalism".

You have lots of choices. Verizon, t-mobile, pay-per-minute, etc.

T-mobile and sprint aren't suffering because of the iPhone. the iPhone isn't an 80% monopoly, and neither is AT&T.

Don't buy it.

that was easy. who's next?

//by the way, I'd love to see every phone and every mobile O/S on every carrier. Except that it doesn't work. that's why I still have a dumbphone while I wait for a good phone to pick up. And Apple's limitations is one reason I don't have a $99 iPhone.

Alrighty...
you know what? I really don't like that I have Cinemax and can't get the movies that are exclusive to Showtime. I think the FTC should make all carriers be able to allow all content. It's a field that needs leveling.

/sarcasm

Every carrier has had exclusive phones. iPhone's a newcomer and suddenly it's a problem? ...please There's examples in all kinds of industries where products or services have exclusive contracts. That is why it's called a "free market". While the iPhone is great in some areas, it sucks in others. The Pre has its strong and wek points. ALL smart phones have strong and weak points. You can choose your phone/contract based upon what com[promises you're willing to make. With all the phones and carriers, no one's being forced into anything.

This reeks of the witch hunt against Microsoft in the 1990s all over again. Don't like Windows? Buy an Apple. Still not happy? Try one of the many versions of Linux.

The last thing any market needs is more government control. The same government that ran out of Cash for Clunkers money in 4 days when they planned it lasting until November.

And there's this:

the car/boat and cinemax/showtime analogies are stupid and don't apply to this situation...you two both need to think a little harder next time...the only one that works is Craig's point concerning open air and relating it to prohibiting certain kinds of internet use...

the point was that you buy a device with full knowledge of the capabilities and restrictions, but then want the FCC to free it up so you can do what YOU want.

If you can't see this simple point, I'm sorry. The analogies are immaterial.

the bigger point that you're missing is the want to free these devices from those same restrictions, therefore your post is immaterial...

Let me try to understand this. Google Voice does what, allow for VOIP calls that would be free if you were connected to a hot spot or your home WiFi?

Is that over-simplified?

so you free the device from restrictions, it returns to the normal cost of $800, and then you bitch about the price of phones.

sounds like you want to have your cake and....wait, I just heard that somewhere.

So is the subsidy more about the restrictions on the device, or about locking you into a contract during which time the carrier recoups it's cost? Keep thinking coffeeshark, I know it hurts.

I'm just saying I could see them killing an app that lets you make free calls.. but then again you can get Skype, so that's a little one sided
