iPod Touch 1st Gen
Alright, so here's the thread I promised. I got 4 of these jokers on a impulse auction, so here I'm going to try and explain how to take them apart and put them back together. The one that's on is an 8GB model, and it being still under warranty and seemingly not being opened before, it will not participate in this thread anymore.
So here are the three remaining models, all of the first generation. The one on the left is the remaining 8GB model, the two on the right are 16GB models.
So the first step is to remove the outer case. On this one, the corner was slightly askew, so I used my knife's screwdriver to slide along the edge until the latches release. This one was opened before, so I wasn't concerned with the scratches. If you are, there are tools specifically made to release the latches, or you could find a piece of plastic strong enough to keep its shape.

So the next step is the 'removal' of the battery. (I don't want to disconnect it so it's just gonna lay to the side.) Nothing here, just gently prise up from underneath it to release the glue. The battery is soldered in.
So next is the removal of the umpteen million screws. I used a Phillips #0, but it's really too big to do the job. There are 2on the top circuit board, 9 down EACH side of the screen, and 4 on the circuit board below (2 covered up by the black tape). The black circuit strip easily comes loose and with some careful wiggling the screen comes out.
Next up is the removal of the main circuit board and antenna. This is the pain, as the wireless antenna is the 'D' shaped black piece in the top left corner. It is very well glued in and takes some patience to get out without damage. The rest of the top portion and the bottom board come out fairly easily, but do take some careful wiggling to get them out.

As you can see, there isn't much to the guts of this device. I'm going to try and get one functioning device out of the three, if not eventually all three. I'll keep this thread updated as I see any progress. This was made rather quickly, and if anyone wants more detail let me know, and if it got put in the wrong place feel free to move the thread. I hope this helps out anyone else who decides to to take theirs apart.
And I'll leave with one last picture of my work area and blame it for all my lousy pictures.
