    I'm intrigued but a little annoyed that for a while at least you would be paying service rates the same as subsidized phones so your overall cost would be higher. Of course if google gains a large market share use rates might go down.

    well, you can save on not paying any texting fees using google voice, so that's 10 or 20 bucks a month.

    Depends on the carrier I suppose. I know Verizon won't let you get a smart phone without a data plan anymore, and I think AT&T might be the same way.

    they all do. I've been with tmo forever, and I even bitched to the retention people about data plans, but they didn't budge, since they know that no one else does it, either.
