    Windows Phone 8

    Will update throughout summit:

    - shared core with Windows 8
    - hot-swap micro-SD cards on all devices - phones, tablets. Means you don't need to leave the card in, or format it every time, just like you use SD cards on your laptop. Move data, read music, etc.
    - IE10 outperforming Safari on iOS6
    - native code, can use DirectX and use same code on Win8 and WP8 - games...
    - NFC - sharing, secure payments, p2p wifi between devices
    - Nokia mapping built-in - NAVTEQ. Also maps work offline (download a region). Turn-by-turn directions.
    - secure boot, device management by businesses, encryption, enterprise marketplace (sideloading)
    - new WP8 start screen, resize tiles, many smaller Live tiles
    - skype and VOIP integration - take calls just like any phone call, runs in background, will notify you even on lockscreen

No upgrade from WP7 phones to WP8. Some features will be enabled, though.

Microsoft: no upgrades to Windows Phone 8, but some features will come in Windows Phone 7.8 | The Verge

Before I dig into all that... will Microsoft bring in other manufacturers besides Nokia?

depends what you mean by "bring in". They're always welcome, but you and they know that Nokia is def a preference. But how many android phones can Samsung make?

What I'm saying is, the Lumia 900 was THE phone. I never saw anything else WP7.5 of consequence. Basically, it looked as if MS was going all in backing Nokia. I'm wondering if they're going to spread out more this time. Judging by the Win8 tabs, I'd predict they are... I just haven't heard it said.

I think MS got a little pissed when Samsung and HTC and the rest started putting out 10 android phones and 1 windows phone. So they put a lot of money and time behind Nokia's WP support.

some more detail on the 7.8 update: Basically, the phone will look like WP8, just won't be able to take advantage of things like NFC and micro-SD slot... for what I thought were obvious reasons, but some people still aren't getting it.

"When you pull that Lumia out of your pocket after you've received that 7.8 update, it will look and feel the same as a Windows Phone 8 device," claims Sullivan. "Because you don't have a multicore chip and don't have some of these other elements, it didn't make sense for us to make those investments for devices that couldn't really exploit them." We pressed Sullivan for details on which devices will be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7.8, but he wouldn’t reveal specifics. "I think it's safe to assume to latest generation of devices are a primary target," he said, pointing to the Lumia 900 as an example of a device that the company wants to "keep fresh."
I'll make it even easier: You can't upgrade apps if the hardware doesn't exist: dual core, NFC, microSD, etc. So MS is giving you the updated look and feel and things your older phone can handle.

Gorgeous OS. If the original wp7 phones were like this, I'd have rocked the original focus or lumia.
