HTML5 Is The Future But Flash Is Now

We've been hearing this for years. Flash is awful. Flash is slow. Flash is a system resource hog. Flash is insecure. HTML5 is the future. Apple won't allow it on a mobile device. Even Adobe is moving away from supporting mobile Flash.

The problem is, Flash simply isn't going away. 36% of websites still use Flash in some way. Look at strafeRight.com- Here's Flash-free sR:

And here's sR with the full web experience:

No Flash-based banners, no Flash animation in the game promotions. And for me, without Flash, some critical work-related databases are inaccessible. Maybe in a year or 2, HTML5 will evolve enough to encourage a wider adoption, but for now, Flash is still very prevalent. The only solution is hundreds of individual little apps for all the sites you want to visit.

There's a good discussion here in the comments:

It'll take time for HTML 5 to completely take over just like with anything. Heck look at IPv6... Not even the US Military is completely on board with that yet and we're the ones that want it soooo bad. lol

Yeah, they said the same thing in 2007 about HTML5.

I know. Takes time. They had IPv6 as early as 1996.

HTML has a decade-long cycle. While I think HTML5 will be quicker, it's still 3-4 years away from full use.

Old web dev axiom: The latest technology works for the fewest people. Flash not working on Apples is a different story - Jobs had a bug up his rear for some reason.....

Still not as bad as an expense reporting system that requires the Oracle Jinitiator (an obsolete version of Java that Oracle made before it bought Sun which is actually based on Java 1.3) which Oracle hasn't supported for a couple years. thank you big red.
