| i agree, everyone should pay the same rate, regardless of income level, as long as you are above the poverty line.
This doesn't suit true socialists, though. They believe the rich can afford to pay more, in percentage, than others.
Barack Obama believes the rich should pay a higher percentage, and he believe profits he deems "windfall" should be taxed even more.

| | | I understand your view, and the reason I don't think he believes that is that he hasn't actually given us his cut on taxes yet. If he raises taxes by 1-3% on everyone, middle class who were already spending 10-15% on healthcare can pay that extra 3% and enjoy a much more affordable healthcare premium that outweighs the new taxes because the >$1 million households end up paying 10-30k more. There is no higher percentage being asked from the rich. They do lose some, but not by paying more taxes. In practice, there's no socialism involved.
Just because the rich guys get screwed doesn't automatically make it socialism. In fact, they don't get hurt as bad as it seems, as their premium costs get reduced far more as well, so everybody gains some.
The only flaw in this is the losses for those who don't want to purchase healthcare due to the fact that they can afford it on the off-chance an accident does happen. Perhaps here, we can input some choice and freedom. If you want healthcare, you pay the tax and share it with others. If you don't want it, then don't. As long as a decent rich population still wants healthcare, such a plan can succeed.
I'm going to log out now so I can sleep. Please note Denny, that I have no left-wing conspiracy in mind to cut my losses and run away in the face of "unsurmountable fact", it's just that I heard somewhere that sleep is important, and it takes a good 2-3 hours in bed for me to be able to attain that level of unconsciousness.
Good night guys, have a nice afternoon :/ .

| | | What he has given us is that he wants to apply the payroll tax above $97k - which I don't have a problem with, but that is a "new" tax on the rich. You may consider it "cutting the tax benefit", but it amounts to a larger tax.
I would approve of it more with a flat tax on all earnings.
But you have to take into account the reason there is a cap of $97k - contributory Social Security. In essence, you only contribute what you get to take out later.
Of course, SS is nowhere near that kind of level now - I don't expect a dime from the government when I retire, and I encourage others to expect nothing and plan for themselves.

| | | looks like I have some epic pages of this thread to go through...
So apparently there was a fight yesterday before the whole laptop incident between my brother and my uncle. I didn't know my brother supported Obama. I may not let him move in with me partially because of that. I can't support a terrorist. Or I can't support anyone terrorists support, that spells F-I-S-H-Y to me. I also can't stand most socialists.

OK, now I'm logging off for serious, with one statement: OBAMA IS NOT A TERRORIST OR A TERRORIST-SYMPATHIZER, TULK!
Good night.

| I never said or implied that he was a terrorist sympathizer. I simply meant that terrorists around the world support him. To me, that is not good and not a good sign. Also his whole deal with the having that middle name, and IDK, his "mistake" of mentioning 57 states.
