White Knight's battle system seems to take much from Final Fantasy XII's.The game uses some sort of complex animation blending system, When the party spotted a group of enemies, the game shifted to a "Battle preparation" screen, where conditional commands can be set when a party member is A.I.-controlled rather than by manual input. Apparently, you're able to freely switch between party members at will, as well as prepare proceeding attacks and commands while the battle continued in real-time. All with that extra layer of polish, too, including fancy team attacks -- the demo showed Lenard restraining an enemy soldier from behind so Yulie could drop kick him with ease. When a character blocks an incoming attack, you'll see his shield go up and physically block the sword. The collision is perfect. In White Knight Story, two characters sparring really look like they're sparring. Each character can be equipped with a "function palette," consisting of a string of skills and moves -- everything from kicks to sword slashes. Skills can be added to the palette freely as long as you follow simple rules about what can follow what You can transform into the White Knight during battle once you've filled up a meter by attacking enemies while in human form. When transformed, you make use of a special function palette which offers up powerful attacks. When facing off against a giant enemy, you'll want to full up your transformation meter and transform as soon as possible.

October 6, 2006 - We're certain that, by now, you've seen that impressive White Knight Story trailer from the Tokyo Game Show. The detailed environments, unique battle system, and life-like animation left Japanese RPG fanatics longing for more. We'll we'll be getting it. A lot more, actually.
Speaking with Japan's Weekly Famitsu magazine, Akihiro Hino, president of developer Level 5 and producer of White Knight Story, said that he hopes to make a game with a 50 to 60 hour play time, which he referred to as a typical play time for an RPG. "With White Knight Story, we don't want to release a half-way product," said Hino. "We want to have a big title that surpasses the volume of the RPGs we've made in the past."
So White Knight clearly won't be some rushed first generation RPG project. But Level 5 apparently had pressure to do just that, with Hino revealing that there was some talk of attempting to get the game out around the time of the PS3's launch. In order to meet the launch, Hino says, Level 5 would've had to cut the story short, which is something he didn't want to do.
While Hino didn't share any new details on White Knight with the magazine, he did provide some insight into his personal gaming tastes. When asked what games he's paying attention to on other hardware, he responded with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, citing the need to match the "extremely beautiful visuals" in those titles.
Hino didn't have anything bad to say about any of the current and upcoming hardware. "The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3, the DS and the PSP... I think this will be the most exciting year end period ever."

September 22, 2006 - Level 5 made the PS2 sing with Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII. Judging strictly by the early screenshots in Famitsu, it seemed that the team's first PS3 project, White Knight Story, wouldn't be the technological marvel that those two titles were.
Sony Computer Entertainment is airing a short trailer for White Knight Story exclusively in its PlayStation 3 theater here at the Tokyo Game Show. The trailer consists of a short game play sequence where the main characters run about over an expansive forest field, encounter some enemies, then face off against a boss.
This may sound like a typical RPG demo. But wait until you see White Knight Story in motion. In our early preview of the game, we posted some comments from Level 5's Akihiro Hino, the producer of the game, regarding the title's focus on animation. He wasn't just hyping up his game; White Knight Story looks like no other Japanese RPG before it thanks to its next generation animation.
In a typical RPG, when you instruct one of your characters to perform a sword attack on in enemy, the character will jump at the enemy, slash his sword, then jump back. The enemy might block the attack, or might take on the full blow. Either way, the sword will probably pass right through the enemy.
That's how RPGs looked before White Knight Story. With Level 5's animation system, swords realistically strike other swords and shields, rather than cutting right through characters. If a character blocks an incoming attack, you'll see his shield go up and physically block the sword. The collision is perfect. In White Knight Story, two characters sparring really look like they're sparring.
From a modeling and shading point of view, White Knight Story is a pretty good looking next generation title, with distant views of its natural landscapes and smooth, at times surreal camera movement. See it in motion, with the most realistic animation ever seen in the genre, and you'll understand what the next generation of RPG visuals is all about. The game's battle scenes look less like gameplay footage than they do the hand scripted sequences that we've seen in countless RPG cut-scenes before.
The TGS demo shows the characters and enemies performing a number of moves over the course of a single battle. The battle starts with your three allies splitting up to take on the three enemies. The main character engages in a sword fight with one of the enemies, and quickly lays waste to him. He then
grabs a second enemy, allowing a female party member to take him out. The third enemy attempts to flee, prompting everyone in your party to follow in pursuit.
This is where the White Knight of the title enters the scene. Your party members are stopped by a giant fire beast. One member runs into attack, but is batted away. The main character tells the female character to step aside, as he shouts out a chant and transforms into the White Knight. The 7-meter alter form charges at the fire beast and leaps in for an attack. Just as you're getting hyped up to see the game's animation engine work on large scale enemies, the demo comes to a close.
White Knight Story looks far along in development. It has all the menus and maps in place, it has attractive titles that introduce new areas and bosses, and it even has voices, with English subtitles (which we presume were specially prepared for the TGS version).
Hopefully this is an indication that we'll get a chance to experience what could be the next generation of RPG gaming in the not-so-distant future

In the face of other next-gen role-playing offerings from competitors like Microsoft, Sony has its own extremely impressive RPG for PlayStation 3 in the form of White Knight Story (a translation of the Japanese title "Shirokishi Monogatari"). Produced by SCE's Japan Studio and developed by the PlayStation stalwarts at Level-5, White Knight Story is one of the first RPGs for PlayStation 3 shown this week at TGS, and looks surprisingly far along.
Details on the story are rather nonexistent at this point, but the playable heroes include the young man Lenard, a woman named Yulie and Eldore, an older male soldier. The art, while more realistic than Level-5's usual cel-shaded approach, still has that anime tinge to it, along with a masterful use of color as seen in the sunlight-bathed plain in the demo.
White Knight's battle system seems to take much from Final Fantasy XII's. When the party spotted a group of enemies, the game shifted to a "Battle preparation" screen, where conditional commands can be set when a party member is A.I.-controlled rather than by manual input.
The demonstration ended with a boss encounter, a huge fire beast called Glerdemos. A few meaningless attacks from the party led to a cut-scene where Lenard decided this was too much for the party, and used the gauntlet on his arm to transform into the white knight itself: a large robot-like fighter. Lenard rushed the beast, and that was the dramatic cliffhanger that ended the look at the game.
As is the case with any impressive new game, seeing it in motion is what counts. With White Knight Story, Level-5 clearly wants to start moving console RPGs to a higher standard. When the quest starts and you begin moving Lenard, he does so while waving at his friends to follow him. In a fight, a few lines of commentary go with the battle cries, along with the aforementioned helper moves. These characters feel alive at all times; not just when a cut-scene starts. No firm release date has been set, but at this point, we'd be happy to give Level-5 all the time they need to make White Knight Story a truly evolutionary RPG.
