Well I bought the game shortly after making this original post. It truly is an amazing game. The animation is supurb, the overall graphics are great and the level design is elegant and simple. The voices are cheesy but they are the same as when I started playing this game in arcades over a decade ago with VF1 so it brings back good memories.
The gameplay is flawless. It plays faster than VF4 and the new fighters are competent. My go to are jackie and Akira and they are fundamentally the same as VF:4 evo. If you are familiar with them from the previous series then you know what to expect. I could spend a day talking about the gameplay and how balanced it is. It is amazing feeling what precision is compared to say my other "fav" Fight Night Round 3 where there is a 4 second frame disadvantage for parrying a fighters moves. VF5 has frame disadvantages but they are usually only a few frames at a time so you have to be on your toes.
This game is much deeper than DOA4 which I also have. I think it is better looking as well. The lack of online does not hurt this game because of the precision needed for each character. Honestly you can spend 1 month just learning one character so replay value is not an issue. Overall; amazing.
Liked the series since the first one came out for arcades - def will have to take a look at it when I get a PS3
