If you use a custom firmware, you can simply rip your UMD to the memory stick and play straight from there. It's pretty much instant.

I've really never had any issues with battery life and my PSP. I have a launch-day PSP and it's still working great. If I put a game on standby, I can resume it three days later and the battery life is right where I left it off at.
About six months ago I grabbed on of the larger 2200mAh batteries and it's a beast. Before I could get about 4-5 hours of it on the lowest brightness setting. With the larger battery I can get 8.5 hours out of it on the lowest brightness setting. I encoded a bunch of movies at 480p to watch on the PSP and I ended up watching four of the movies on the same battery charge. When the last movie ended, I checked the battery life and it still had another two hours left.
Using the 2nd level of brightness will knock an hour or two off the total time, and the 3rd brightness setting will knock it from 8.5 hours down to 3-4. If you have a custom firmware and have the ability to use the 4th level of brightness, you're only going to get about 1.5 hours of it, but you'll also go blind from the brightness.
