Kotaku: The problems with Olympic Video Games

Thought this was an interesting article. I haven't really followed the genre since the days of the old school stuff like Track & Field, Decathlon & the Epyx Games series on the C=64 but I do recall if you had a group of friends hanging around on a rainy day those old games were fun. I think the problem is with all the fancy graphics our systems can do now the typical button mashing required to get high-scores/records in the older games loses its appeal after a few tries. I could see it getting interesting with Internet posted records but have a feeling high-score hacks would be more the norm than people who were just really good.

The Problem(s) with Olympic Video Games - Sports - Kotaku

    Interesting read none-the-less.

old school pencil trick started with Track and Field, moved to any other game that demanded superfast button mashing.

lol. a pencil. Thoughts of using a different medium other than purely fingers didn't cross my mind lol.

Pencil trick worked in the arcade [Although we used to use something a bit more solid usually 3-4 inch piece of metal] but on the Commodore 64 those fancy joysticks that had auto-fire modes and right/left or up/down switches made life easier. I used to have a Targus joystick that had a metal stick with a metal ring around it that worked great for the games where you had to rotate the joystick in a circular motion like the cycling events in Summer Games.

Actually the pencil trick reminded me of the game where you could get credits by shorting out the metal rivets on the machine. There was usually one combination of rivets which would give you a mild shock. touch the two together with something conductive would often do something weird like erase the high scores or give you credits or in one case blow a fuse in the Pizzaria.

Sheesh, the main arcade experience I have is playing a bunch of SF3 (and losing badly to a bunch of really, really good players) at my local game store.
