Suggestions for a good RTS?

I am a real time strategy fanatic. I have tried FPS's and RPG's over the last 2 years or so and find myself really missing the strategy involved in making and managing an army to obliterate an opponent's base. Any suggestions on a good RTS game (with active online pvp participation, of course) ?

Surely something awesome has come out since Generals. I am not much of an Ages of Empires fan, personally I do not think Microsoft can spell RTS much less make a good one.

On a side note, I was cleaning out my desk area and found my Warcraft III disk. Thought it may be fun to see if anyone still played. I was amazed not only that there were some 8000 people on WCIII, but that Blizzard has a contest going on for Starcraft players. What is Starcraft, nearly 8-10 years old now? Wonder how many still play it?

RTS wise, if you like WC3 and Starcraft, give Dawn of War a try, I believe there is a demo for that.
The Star Wars: Empire at War RTS is coming out next month, and there is a demo out for that one.
There is also Ground Control 2, which I do not know if there is a demo. I enjoyed that one, but given a choice I would take Dawn of War.

i'd recommend dawn of war too. its got great dynamics and the only thing that it is really lacking is economic devolpment, but if you don't like aoe then maybe you prefer a more action based rts (a like aoe personally, but i think dawn of war is a better pvp game, as a really intense match is usually only around a half hour long, unlike aoe 2 or 3 which can easily take 2-4 hours)

I'd recommend shaving your brain with a rusty spoon. Usually the same effect as playing a RTS.

Thanks for all the input. I downloaded the DoW and Rome:Total War demo's. I do not think I would be happy with the DoW graphics in the long run. That is what has kept me from playing C&C to any extent. Did DoW improve graphics with the Winter Assault (or whatever) expansion? Total War has a decent graphics engine and gameplay looks solid but is a little too bland for me, I guess I want mages and such.

I absolutely wore out WC III and expo, guess I may go back to them for a fix util something with similar gameplay/graphics comes along.

Thanks again, and shoot me any other suggestions you may have!
