New Player on EVE Online

Hello Everyone,
About a year ago I played a trial account of EVE Online, and was quite impressed. Unfortunatly my desktop at that point couldn't run it very well, so I didn't continue. I am going to be getting a new laptop sometime soon, and am thinking about trying EVE again.

My question is this. Beyond whether the game is good or not, is it something that a new player can pickup and actually get involved in, especially since there are players who have been aroudn for 2-3 years. Can a new player actually advance/do anything or are they always going to be under the shadow of the 1000 or so players who have had 3 years to level up their skills and find positions in the corps?

That would be better directed at eve's forums. But I suspect you could get heavily involved if your willing to put in the time. Eve's playerbase has been constantly growing.
