Vanguard - Review (from IGN)

I just noticed IGN posted their review for Vanguard, so I thought I'd throw up a thread to point it out.

I'm not really excited about this MMO. From the little I watched my cousin play Beta, it looked a bit stale for my taste. I got a kick out of this part of the review though:

Yea, I was hoping it was good, and it could be good after a few months of patching. I was dying to play a new MMO and get away from WoW because it was starting to get a little stale.

It's odd, I have a few 60's in WoW, I basically retired them to wait for the expansion. When the expansion comes out, I can't seem to get into playing them anymore. It feels like more of a chore to play them then it feels fun. All my characters up until two weeks ago were Horde.

I just started two new ones on the alliance side, and it's adding a bit of new flavor to the game. Sure, the quests are basically the same with all these MMO's, but it provides a little difference in scenery. I really wish they would add a new zone and set of quests for levels 30 - 60 in WoW. I'd then want to play all these alts and try to get them to at least 60. I had an absolute blast playing a Blood Elf through level 22. Once I got out of the new zone and back to the same old Horde zones, he's trailed off and has been shelfed since.

its gonna take a lot to beat WoW... i hope LortR and Huxley make a dent

when i first saw vanguard i wasnt impressed. the graphics look like crap and it seemed too hardcore. it is kind of sad with all these MMO's coming out that they flop. i saw a bunch of pre order boxes of lord of the rings online at best buy. it has to suck to make a game and realize it isnt any good. what i want to know is what are those 120000 people smoking.

i am hopeful age of conan, warhammer online, and pirates of the burning sea will be good. also other MMOs i forgot.

its hard to make really good graphics in an MMO... it needs to be able to support constant online play... with thousands of people

yes, in MMO terms the vanguard graphics suck. look at the warhammer screens or age of conan or other MMOs in development. even WoW, with its simple poly counts, at lesat has a style. vanguard just looks..bleh

I really think Warhammer has a chance at taking away a lot of WoW subscribers.

I agree. I think that is the problem with making the more "realistic" graphics for these MMO's. It leaves them looking odd and blah. I thought the same thing with EQ2 and D&D.

I'm personally just looking for something to play during WoW breaks. Then again, if WoW had some really great competition it might lead to a lot more content added. I still pop in City of Heroes/Villains every few months and play that for a few weeks. My main problem with that is server population and performance. The game just needs to be optimized a bit more or something because every patch seems to make it run worse on my machine. I wish they would allow server transfers, even paid.

i bet there will be a strong LorR following... and Huxley will be fairly large too.. we'll see what happens

blizzard is just taking over the market
