which MMORPG is right for you

This came up in another thread...sooo i thought id post a poll about it.

since the birth of mmorpgs the market has seen nothing but growth. it seems games that do well however have been sparatic at best. even now, you hear the acronym MMORPG and the first thing to most peoples mind is everquest. the next gen of MMORPGs are almost on us and though their release dates sure are spread out, if even determined, these have the potential to take the throne from the original eq.

EQ2 - based off of the original hit. players return to norrath centuries after the original. excellent 3d. no known release date.
http://everquest2.station.sony.com/

FFXI - based on the very popular rpg games. ffxi takes place in the world of vanadiel. redmages, ninjas, chocobos, o my. already released in japan, releases in america mid/late october.
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml

Horizons - battle the undead in the land of istaria. next gen mmorpg with tradeskills, virtual community, and a host of character types including dragons! change actual game parameters by the quests you accomplish. currently in beta3 testing.
http://www.istaria.com

World of Warcraft - based on the world of 3 very successful rts games, Azeroth. WoW, set 4 years after the end of warcraft3 brings all races togeter to fight against new and ancient threats that plague the land. no known release date.
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wow/

so enough of my horrible classifying. which of these 4 are you going to pay to play?

Currently I have EQ/EQOA/PlanetSide and was planning on playing EQ2 but at the rate SOE is screwing up I doubt I will play another SOE game. I have however never played a blizzard game I didn't like so i can't wait for WoW. I beta tested SWG and it was boring. EQ atm is screwed for anyone with a pure melee character as their main (Class balance has been screwed for a year and the devs keep saying "we are looking into it") and the door bug in planetside hasn't been fixed and has been in game since retail launch. Unless SOE starts fixing stuff and soon i'm going to cancell my accounts and sign up for WoW soon as it launches.

powersurge, i know 6 or 7 people who work for soe in diff departments and levels. some devs a few in beta and a couple more in QA. if you like i can check with them on a few issues and maybe get back to you? id be working at soe myself if it wernt for this damn thing called education =D 3 years ago when EQ was really gaining its strongest backing i applied and was as good as hired, except for my time schedule -_- eh.. probably too stressful anyway. i find selling flowers a bit more laid back.

Its nothing new really people have been complaining for almost a year about those issues. The door bug in planetside has been there off and on since retail launch and the melee balance problems have just been getting worse and worse in EQ. No amount of emails, /feedback, etc.. have done any good. I'm just playing other character classes in EQ till WoW comes out and I haven't played planetside in weeks. Long as SOE isn't loosing massive cash they don't care.

Not to mention that at the last FF they basicly said we are "still looking into it". And Absor has posted on several community boards saying "Classes are not that out of balance".

Anarchy Online

As of now, I think the best game currently out there is Anarchy Online. In truth has hte least amount of fatal bugs, the MOST content of any game EVER. (trust me on this.... over 200 variations of a single weapon!)

The skill system is second to none, as no 2 characters can be exactally alike (well you can but it would be damn hard!)

The graphics are par with current technology, the ambient sound, music are perfect!

The game play is only flawed by other gamers (like any MMO)
The mission system (which Lost Dungeons of Norath Ripped off) is great, teaming and interaction is both easy, and fun.

All in all it's a pretty good game.

The down side is, if you are new to the game, YOU WILL be frustrated, because the game has TOO much depth. .. But Funcom has GM's and Advisors in the Newbie Zones to asnwer questions and help people along. Let's see SONY do that!! (HA!)

so check it out. www.anarchyonline.com

Funcom is also the only company that does not require you to retail buy thier software. You can download the basic version of the game (about 1.3 Gig) for free, with a 7 Day trail! Definately a NICE feature.

Also, if any of you decide to give it a try, look me up on the Atlantean server, the name is Kislev.

I played Anarchy Online for about a year and a half. It was fun for a while then tedious then boring. Of course starting graduate school ate most of the time I had been using to play the game.

I also played the closed beta of Planetside but never bothered once it went retail. I wasn't a big fan of the original lattice implementation and never got to play the latter revisions in open beta since I was without a 'net connection for about 3 weeks right then. When everything was working, however, it was pretty fun. But more often than not battles were felt fairly one-sided (either due to balance or population issues). I might try it out again once I get my 5680.

I'm currently looking forward to FFXI. I like the setting and the visuals, and I like most of what I've heard about gameplay. I'm just hoping it doesn't devolve into another 'you must play x, y, or z in these specific ways to get anywhere in the game'; which is a problem with most MMOs out there and was one of the last few things that pushed me from AO.

Kids, if there's one thing you take away from River City Ransom, may it be that violence is the answer to your problems. If you beat a gang member hard enough, he will become an honor student. And if you beat an honor student hard enough, he will give you his lunch money.

Whats the deal with AO anyway? Is it PvP? Can you compare it to everquest? Exp/skill system? Is it mostly PvP? PvM? mixed? Is it heavy trade skill style game with no content and boring gameplay ala SWG? Just wondering what its all about never really checked it out. Wondering if I should give the 7 day trial thing a chance sometime.

AO, especially since the 'booster pack' Notum Wars. Has a strong Faction/Guild based PVP element. Missions (solo and team) and Hunting are the PVM elements and are the primary source of experience points (the last time i played anyway). There are tradeskills but, again, as of the last time I played they were more or less headache-inducing time and money sinks (though they could produce some nice stuff).
