    Star Wars Galaxies SWG

Just wondering if anyone has any early thoughts/opinions on this game and if it is worth actually buying AND paying the montly dues for when it is finally released?

I've heard alot of complaints that supposedly you can only have one character per server. I played Asherons Call for a verrrry long time in and out of beta until I finally quit out of sheer boredom. Looking for an MMORPG that brings something different to the table.

I have something against "monthly dues" for a video game. I most likely will not be getting it, unless the single-player/multi-player are free, and without recurring charges.

I've got other habits to feed!

Me too, I have a serious problem with paying 50 dollars for a game and then 13 a month after that? Come on, 4 months of playing and the game is worth 100 dollars? Not for me i'm afraid. I refuse to get ripped off like that!

I've been playing AC for quite a while and enjoying it. And StarWars is of course awesome, but as everyone said, the monthly fees are just insane. I'm only barely willing to pay the $9 a month for AC1 (I won't touch AC2 or Evercrack with their $14 a month fees).

I couldn't believe it when I did the math, even at $9 a month, AC has gotta be pulling in at least $250,000 A MONTH! The MMORPG system is like the lottery, your chances of making one that really takes off are small, but if you manage it you're going to be a millionaire soon.

EDIT: And Evercrack's idea of charging $50 for the game, $13 a month, AND another $50 every time they come out with another expansion is getting just a little too greedy for me.

untill the day comes where I can't get a "normal" game i will not be paying a monthly subscription.

an hourly rate would be ok, if low enough, but there's no way I could gaurantee how much per month i would play.

But the gaming community has to say to the pay2play industry "No further! We will not pay a subscription to games! We will only pay once, and $50 is stretching it already!"

if we dont pay to play these games, they'll stop making them and then there's no threat of every game going that way.

What if BF1942 or Q3 or UT2003 were on this model? How would you feel then.

Because if things look good for the subscription model, BF1942-2 and Q4 and UT2004 might require a subscription (for multiplay anyway)

Wherever there is a pay to play deal for online gaming I'm sure there are people trying to hack it. They're looking out for the little guy......or the big guy who doesn't want to pay.

It will most likely never be 'free'. Most of these games have paid GM's and techies working round the clock so the work is never really done. Also the servers aren't cheap.

Until there is no market for these kinds of games "MMORPG's" there will continue to be monthly charges. Unfortunately for some the market for these kinds of games is growing.

Yeah, I tottaly agree with you Andersen on the whole everquest expansions. I think if you're already paying a monthly fee the damn expansions should be free.

While I'm not against the whole monthly charges for an MMOrpg or mmofps, I am against a monlty charge for getting information form a site... "IGN, GAMESPOT, fileplanet..." They're basically charging for what you can probably get free somewhere else.

    Absurd

I refuse to pay to play for any online game. As far as I am concerned, if a company wants to make games online compatible, then they can build it into the cost.
But this online crap, is just absurd. I mean for MMORPG, the game IS online, there is no other game, so to pay additionally is like extortion.
Hopefully two things will kill this system. First, that games with free online will continue to gather the majority of the popularity of players, and second, that the pay games will kill themselves. If more and more games continue to go this way, many will find themselves fighting against a fixed market size. If there are only X number of people willing to pay, then they are further stretched over a larger number of networks, making all less profitable. Hopefully this will reach a critical mass, leading to a point where many cannot continue to produce further games.

Here is my question, just what is it that these online pay games are providing that a game like AOM or BF1942 aren't offering? Is it in any way worth $15/month.

Every new MMORPG has a lot of problems when it's first launched. I'd say wait a few months after it's released. Check out their boards... look at reveiws... etc.

I'm not sure if SWG has anything new that any other MMORPG doesn't have. To me they all look like the same thing, even 'Neocron' a supposedly first person shooter MMO. Hopefully Planetside will be better.
