Hellgate: London Demo Includes Adware

I'll just let the quote from IGN give you an idea of what the EULA of the Hellgate: London demo means to the end user. Here's the lovely word from your buddies at EA Games:

Quote:
The Software incorporates technology of Massive Incorporated ("Massive") that enables in-game advertising, and the display of other similar in-game objects, which are uploaded temporarily to your personal computer or game console and replaced during online game play. As part of this process, Massive may collect your Internet protocol address and other basic anonymous information, and will use this information for the general purposes of transmitting and measuring in-game advertising.

Consent to Use of Data. You agree that EA, its affiliates, and each Related Party may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer, including without limitation your Internet Protocol address, operating system, application software and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online play. EA and/or the Related Parties may also use this information in the aggregate and, in a form which does not personally identify you, to improve our products and services and we may share that aggregate data with our third party service providers.
Can EA Games just stop trying to ruin the video gaming world please? I mean wtf, the next title should be EA HellGamesGate: We Suck Every Last Dollar Out Of Your Ass.

The expansion can be called: Bring A Friend!

While I don't mind advertisements in games, I disagree with the extreme use of the data they collect.

It would be one thing if it was completely anonymous and only tracked information like BF2142 did. BF2142 would record whether you were looking at a billboard or not, the time spent looking at it and the angle you looked at it from. They used that data to decide which ads to place and where.

With Hellgate: London, it's basically going to track your IP address, software on your system, operating system and hardware you have. Not only are they going to track this, but they are going to share it with any third party that is willing to give them a penny.

This is taking it to the extreme and honestly, I will not be buying this game simply to stand up for what I believe in.

I agree...how can they do something like that? Isn't the IP addy property of the ISP? That's like me selling your addresses to snail mail spammers because I know if you're a male/female and what kind of car you drive. doesn't seem legal

believe in? you don't believe in someone else knowing the specs of your system? come on. Half these people voluntarily post their specs to 3dMark to boast their scores.

You buy it from HP, they know your specs. Do you think HP doesn't sell your info? Everyone sells your info.

Unless having your IP equals having your home phone and address, this has no bearing on your privacy, or whatever you are objecting to.

I don't care if they know what I have on my system, unless they are taking my data, not my system specs.

Sure, you voluntarily submit that information.

Yes, if you agree to them selling it.

In a way, yes. With static IPs and even dynamic addresses that just don't reset... your IP address is you. They'll track that IP address on any of their sites, any site that information was sold to, etc. They'll start tracking cookies and matching up address and gathering more information on you. With the combination of all of these things, they're going to have your home address and phone number before you know it.

They are taking data. They are taking lists of software you have installed. Without disclosing specifically what they're taking, you can be sure they're collecting the name of all software installed and possibly information about them. This could include names and organizations used to register programs, addresses, registry information. It could be anything.

If I want to voluntarily give out my system information, that's my prerogative, not theirs. And it's not the matter that they're collecting that information. I participate in Steam's anonymous surveys because they are just anonymous. This EULA basically says not only are they going to collect that information, but they're going to share it.

They don't even disclose what kind of software information they're going to be pulling. They're probably going to be pulling the name and company information that was used when you installed Windows. The list of software they collect could possibly include more information than you think. Your name plus your IP address can easily get them a home address and phone number for you possibly. You can be sure they're going to share the name, e-mail address and other information that you signed up with as well.

All of this is just collecting too much data and sharing it too freely.

Advertisements are fine. Collecting this much information when it has no purpose is not. I do not want them to invade my system and collect information and I will not be buying this game because I don't believe in letting them do that. That's my choice.

I like my privacy and I will continue to keep it. Unless, of course, I choose to share it.

I agree, I tried the demo and it was pretty cool. But after reading this, I'm just going to uninstall it and never look at this game again. It's fucked up how they do this kind of sh!t, it's not fair at all.

It's sold anyway. You're dreaming if you think your info is kept secret.

You assume that they are after your home address and phone number. This is like assuming that HP won't sell your info if you ask them not to. Doesn't mean they won't, doesn't mean they will.

My PCs are registered to Coffee, organization none. My software is all registered to the same. I don't install games on my work PCs. I don't care if they know about my other games, or about my PaintShop Pro, or whatever.

Information is money, and I don't believe that anyone really keeps it to themselves - maybe a few good companies.

Again, you're assuming they're after your personal info. It's absolutely true that they should be disclosing what they are pulling. The only place my IP is connected to my real name is at my ISP, which supposedly requires a court order to pull.

Your info is EVERYWHERE. You can find so much online, unless you've done due diligence and cleaned it up, or started as anonymous from day one online.

I agree with your choice, and that you're not crying about them doing it, you're just not going to buy the game, and that you think it's BS that they're doing it. More power to you. I just don't share the sentiment.

I don't consider it "adware", because I think adware is a negative intrusion, like pop-ups, or browser hijacks, or stupid browser menus.

I think the EULA should be more descriptive, to the complete list of what they are seeking from your system.
