| | | PC game steals Oblivion assets Limbo of the Lost allegedly borrows environments from Bethesda's latest Elder Scrolls game; publisher caught unawares, developer unreachable. Quote:
The word "limbo" is a thesaurus-suggested synonym of "oblivion." So it's oddly fitting that Majestic Studios' Limbo of the Lost is under fire for apparently stealing art from Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Oblivion | Quote:
As pointed out by GamePlasma, some of the environments in Limbo of the Lost bear a striking resemblance to areas of Oblivion, from textures used to room layouts and the objects that populate them. Although the similarities in the screenshots are undeniable, the games themselves are quite different in practice. Limbo |
They say that immitation is a highest form of flattery, but I think that this is going just a bit too far. I hope that the developers of Limbo are bashed for pulling this stunt.

Sharon, MA, May 11th, 2008 – Tri Synergy, Inc. (Tri Synergy - A revolutionary approach to software publishing) would like to publish an official comment regarding recent comparisons of level design and artwork between Majestic Studios’ Limbo of the Lost and Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion/Eidos Interactive’s Thief: Deadly Shadows. Tri Synergy is just as shocked as everyone else is by the recent screenshot comparisons. At no point during our dealings with Majestic Studios up until the point that the comparison was first publicly made by a third party did we have any knowledge of these similarities. Additionally, Tri Synergy will discontinue distribution of Limbo of the Lost in both retail and online outlets.
We have contacted the developer, Majestic, and are anxiously awaiting their response. As soon as we know more on this matter we will issue another statement.

The comments also bring interesting light to the situation... Quote:
Just so that everyone knows and there isn't any confusion, this game uses the Wintermute Engine. Majestic did not need to do any model or texture or level design ripping. At all.
THe Wintermute Engine uses 2.5D. Like old Resident Evil games. It is 3D character moving on a 2D background.
So how Majestic ripped off some many games is easy. They just made screenshots. All those images you see, the reason they can steal from other games, is because the entire background is a screenshot.
Apparently, someone has defaced the official Wintermute forums. Wintermute Engine Forum - Index |

After the revelation, others looking into the game discovered environments and features that appeared to be taken from the games The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament 2003, Diablo II, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Crysis, Silent Hill 4: The Room, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Painkiller, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, and World of Warcraft

| I can't remember the company, but it was like a few lighting textures or shaders or something. Definitely nothing crazy as what these guys did.

| | | that's called desperation. whenever you need to steal stuff from someone else's game to make a game, you suck. i'm still laughing my ass off at your sig panic.

| I think it was somebody poking around in the STALKER:SoC files and noticing the same filenames as ones from Doom 3 and thinking they stole textures. | | |
