    ATI Drivers 4 Doom 3

Here's the deal. The game plays smooth for like 10-20 minutes, then crashes. I figured my laptop was overheating, but then I found other folks with same problem on the net. Some dude posted ATI's new drivers as possible solution http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4547.html

I'm installing it now. Once I do I'll let you know if it fixes it on my 9700 mobility. Oh,and do I have to unistall old drivers or can I just install this and play?

You should uninstal the old ones. there are instructions on the website telling you how.
Please post some benchmarking results if you can. I am curious to how well the beta 4.9s work.

Do catalyst drivers work on laptops? I tried installing the 4.8's and it yelled at me saying I didn't have the proper hardware configuration. BTW I have a Compal CL56. I also heard that Omega drivers may be another way to fix the problem.

when you download omega catalyst drivers from omegacorner, they have a file built in that translates the code to work on your laptop. Essentially, catalyst drivers are meant solely for desktop gpus, but a file has been developed that makes catalyst work fine with laptops.

So you would reccomend going with Omega drivers? Do they have any shortcomings as far as other tasks that i would notice?

<---Dude, your right. It didn't work. It yelled the same message at me. So does this mean we can't update new drivers to a laptop video card? That is rediculous. Had I known that I'd never have bought one. I mean, ATI makes a mobility card, but you cant get a driver for one from their site that works? What do I do? Where do I go? Somebody help me. I tried going to my computer manufacterur (Chembook) but they are clueless and are not any help at all.

there's a simple program that was developed that converts the catalyst drivers so that they're compatible with ati's mobile gpus.
Idiotboy: go to omegacorner.net You'll find omega's 4.7 catalyst drivers there which is what I'm currently running on my 128mb M11. They have the converter file "built-in" so they work with your laptop. These drivers are generally considered the best performance drivers for ati cards.
Ati doesn't have any drivers on their site for laptops. Instead, they tell you to ask your vendor for driver updates. What I do, as well as many other educated laptop owners, is go to omega and check for updates. the 4.8 drivers should be released soon.

Thanks so much Tourney! I'll get the drivers when I get home from work. Hopefully this should make Doom 3 even more enjoyable than it already is.
