Hey everyone, i got doom 3 a few days ago but haven't been able to really get into it yet because it keeps freezing and crashing at random spots after a few minutes of playing  - what can i do to stop this!?! also, using my setup, does anyone know what the optimal settings for playing would be? thanks!

There's a bunch of tweaks and links here in the gaming section. Mainly, you want to set these in your DoomConfig.cfg:
    seta image_useCache "1"
    seta image_cacheMegs "128"
    seta image_cacheMinK "2048"

Also, in Doom3 turn off Shadows and Vsync, run at 1024x768-Medium or High or 800x600-High. It's running well for me.

I dont think that shadows are something that should be turned off. Sure, they kill your framerate, but my god they look good. I go at 800x600 medium with shadows on and vsync off.

i agree that the shadows are really a big part of the game. i would leave them on, even if you can play at a higher resolution without them.

how do u know whether to use the older versions of omega drivers as oppsed to the new 4.7s? in other words, why would i use 4.5 instead of 4.7?
