New PlayStation 3 Details Emerge

The latest issue of PSM has revealed new details about the PlayStation 3. While CNN’s Chris Morris claims that Sony won’t announce a price for the PS3 at E3 2006, PSM says the PlayStation 3 is expected to sell for about $399 in the U.S., €322 in Europe and ¥45,965 in Japan.

The magazine also claims that the console will come standard with a 60GB, non-removable hard drive.

For those who care about backward compatibility, PSM also revealed that PSO and PS2 games will run on the PlayStation 3 in 720, 1080i and 1080p.

The magazine also confirms some info we already knew. First, all games will come in Blu-ray Disc media and there won’t be regional lockouts. Second, the launch line-up, as well as the final design for the controller, will be revealed at next month’s E3 expo.
Finally, the console will launch in the first half of November with the PlayStation Network Platform service launching simultaneously with the console and offering free online gameplay.

It's all still rumors, people, especially from the Sony rumor-mill PSM. If Sony sells it for $400, good for us, bad for SCEI. Sony will lose $300-400 per console and cannot possibly make it up by selling 4 times the volume of games when they only have 50% of the global market. They've already lost $860,000,000 so far fiscal 2006. If they sell 3 games per console at $50 then it'd be a $150-$250 loss instead per unit = ~$1 Billion in the first year, even after the games. Remember that MS broke even by selling the original Xbox at a $100-150 loss and selling 2-3 games with the console. How long could Sony last while bleeding that much? How many people do you know buy 6-8 games when they buy a console? It takes the average console 1.5 years to get 5 games, and while we all know Sony is in this for the long-haul, it makes much more sense that their European marketing Boss was right when he said it would sell for ~$500.

Rumors is all i can say. If I were a company, I would not want to sell millions of units but have billion dollar losses with it. Sony especially, with their slumping sales in electronics as a whole, can not afford to go crazy to satisfy Timmy, the 7 year old who wants to play kingdom hearts 3. Moreover as blue ray technology is slowly showig it's face, consumers can see what price these advanced readers will be selling for, and let me tell you if you are unaware of it, it's about $700. So until Sony themselves say something, I won;t beleive one piece of info that comes out.

Also a small reminder that SONY execs in europe commented on a price for the PS3 which was above $400. The US will not get a better price than Europe so let's not even start that discussion because if you look back historically, the PS1 and 2 were the same price in teh US and europe (i know since I lived in france when both systems came out and edecided to purchase the US version). Anyway Sony is full of promises that never ever come true so until we hold in our hands a flyer with specs and a real price, we should not beleive anything.
