The last thing any consumer wants is to have an expensive machine which plays a dying format.
| And that is why you shouldn't buy a player for either format until they are cheap.

| And this is why smart people always wait to the end of a format "war" to buy stuff (unless you are super cool and buy a combo player)
Looks like something that Sony has backed is actually gonna win a format war... its a miracle!

| And this is why Sony put in in their machine in the first place... because they can tell the future... MS made theirs as an add on so you can just buy another one when their Blu-Ray adapter comes out

This is typical Sony cut-throat PR spin tactics at work. Next Gen SlapFest: HD DVD Responds to Blu-ray's Target Exclusivity - Gizmodo Quote: |
Target will continue to carry the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive as well as HD DVD titles so we don't see much of a change in their plans to carry both formats. In fact, they continue to sell Toshiba HD DVD players on their website. Sony appears to have bought an end cap, just as HD DVD has in retail stores such as BestBuy and Circuit City.
| Target is still selling the 360 HD DVD add on drive, HD DVD movies, and you can still buy the Toshiba Players from their online store.
Target still hasn't gone the way of Kmart yet? First Blockbuster now Target .. two stores that have been belly up for the past 2 years seeking free advertising hoping that Sony can save them.

And I don't see why people buying them will make them cheap.

| | | hooray. another store i don't shop carries bluray PLAYERS exclusively. cause i'm looking to shell out for one. not.
as i explained when the PS3 came out - No One cares what is better, or what has more features, or what has 10gb more storage than another. PRICE IS KING. always will be.
When someone drops the $199 player (not the xbox hd-dvd hack), they will win. No one will buy nextgen en masse until there is a benefit - and a better picture is not worth $500 to the average consumer. This is quite a difference in quality, but nothing compared to the VHS->DVD change.
the exclusivity deals won't last past this Christmas season. All will fold when faced with consumer money.
If HD starts to gain any momentum, Blockbuster will make your head spin with how fast they stock HD in-store.
Streaming movies to your Tivo and broadband internet piped into your HDTV will probably destroy both formats eventually. You're at work, you order the movies you want online, they get pushed to your set-top box, you go home and watch them. No blockbuster store, no netflix, no discs.
