All console manufacturers loose bigtime in initial releases of consoles. Microsoft is loosing bigtime still today for each one sold and they are dropping the prices $100 per premium and core system in october, just in time for ps3 release.

Yes, of course they do. MS lost about $100-150 per Xbox but made it up by selling 2-3 $50 games per console. With the PS3 costing ~$700-800 to manufacter, if they sell it for $400, they'd be losing 3-4 times the amount that MS did with the original Xbox. That's the reason alot of people are worried with the PS3. Sony can sell the PS3 for a dime, but they'll go out of business or go bankrupt. With two new and very expensive technologies in the PS3 (Blu-Ray and Cell), alot can go wrong. Sony cannot possibly sell 4 times the games with only 50% of the market (with MS having 35% and a year headstart). I feel Sony will have to sell the PS3 at a higher price point. Sony's (French Marketing?) boss had to be right with the $500+ price. That way they don't have to sell so many games to make up for the price loss.

Pretty much what I said in a longer version. Sony can and will charge premium they always do. I will boil down to what there market analysis group comes up with and how much they are willing to take a hit on to content with M$.

sony has been in the game awhile and a bit longer than MS so i think it will be comparably priced to the 360 and possibly cheaper... also they have an entire extra year to see what people have said they wanted out of the 360 but never got and now they have a chance to incorporate that into there system

If they sell it cheaper than the 360 then God help Sony's investors. They've just confirmed a $870,000,000 lost for fiscal 2006.

unfortunatly they might have to lower the prices because by that time 360 will have been out for almost a year and 1. Halo 3 is coming out i think the same day and 2. they are going to probably try to slow the sell of PS3s

How much would a PS3 have to be to break even on the hardware sales? If Sony is going to sell it for $700, they just deceided not to take a hit or a big one on each unit.

This is insane. More than $500 for one and a premium may cost north of $600. I could build a gaming PC for that price.
i think ill stick with my 360

Well, Sony wouldn't have to sell just 5 games to break even. They're also pushing it as a Blu-Ray player (although so far it only outputs 1080i). So they could sell the normal 3-4 games at $50 each, and add a few Blu-Ray movies also for the parents at $25-30 each and break even that way. So you can see why financially the PS3 is not just for games in Sony's eyes. They would NEED Blu-Ray movies to break even or make a profit.
