    Firmware Update on July 24

Sony's PlayStation 3 will very shortly be updated to firmware version 1.90.

The latest download, which will be released in Europe on July 24, brings with it a range of new features, fixes, and tweaks, including emoticons, in-game PS3 video setting customization, and the ability to eject a disc using the option menu.

Other new features include the ability to rearrange games on the XMB (dashboard), change folder classifications, add bookmarks, and enable Web security, as well as access new XMB backgrounds and a "bit mapping" option in music settings.

Also in the update is the ability to change the CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz, force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI, save AVCHD-type animations from a memory stick, and change settings such as upscaling while playing PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.

Avatars will also now move during visual chat. In the past, once firmware is available in Europe, it is also available in North America. However, Sony representatives had not returned calls to confirm this about the update as of press time.

Sony claims PS3 failure rate of less than one per cent
PS3 failure rates are “around .02 percent”
according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe founder, Chris Deering while speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival on Tuesday.

If accurate, that puts PS3 failure rates well below the industry average of three to five percent.

By comparison, some reports pin Xbox 360 failure rates as high as one third of all consoles in existence. As a result, Microsoft extended the Xbox 360 warranty from one to three years in July citing “an unacceptable number of repairs” without disclosing specific failure rates.

Nintendo has yet to reveal any failure rates for the Wii.

Yeah, I haven't heard of anybody having problems with their PS3 - only the 360. The people who have a Wii probably don't play it enough to even find out if there's a problem with it :P

After the success of the $499 60gb sale, dropping the 80gb to $499 would make a lot of sense.

    patch update...

    PlayStation.Blog » Firmware Update (v1.92)

As Kotaku, Joystiq and others are pointing out, we’ve released a minor firmware update (version 1.92) for the PS3. This update focuses on some PS3 compatibility and playability issues for select titles. A search site for looking up compatible titles is also in the works, as soon as it’s live, I’ll publish a link to it here.
