    Re: PS3 Deal With Hulu

here's one about how FOX is circumventing Hulu due to disagreements with co-ownership on the whole mobile access: Fox Goes Around Hulu For Mobile TV App

here's one where Hollywood wants to add more "windows" to your levels of access to their content: Content Owners Force Hulu To Block Mobile Browsers As Well | Techdirt

the reality is that Hulu is, for better or worse, made up of a lot of providers. whenever there are this many cooks in the kitchen, they are sure to disagree on the recipe. throw in the fact that they also have movies on there and it adds in a load of new issues because of the SAG and other union-type organizations that legally have a right to block any such distribution of the content.

basically, its a giant mess because Hulu is at this point free and doesn't generate enough revenue to pay content providers the fees they want. the ads hulu runs really don't pay much. what they need to do is suck it up and go with a subscription model like Netflix. that way they can say they're paying a fair percentage of dollars from their revenues to the providers and unions.

    Re: PS3 Deal With Hulu

Interesting. I think the content owners need to realize there's a big picture happening here. Money and the economy. Look at where we're at these days
    (dollars are estimated)

Cable, internet, phone, premium channels, DVR, extra box or 2, HD: $135
    PPV content:$20
Phone contract, data plan, an upgrade or 2: $115
    Movie purchase/rentals: $30

The numbers are probably a little high, but not that unrealistic... we're talking $300 a month here. Another $10 a month is not a big deal for a Hulu subscription, but the way it's looking, they're going to want a separate subscription for your mobile platform and possibly your PS3. This means one person will have to pay 3 fees to get the same content at home, on their laptop via WiFi, and on their phone. $30 a month more is not a realistic number for just Hulu. Don't get me wrong, Hulu is pure awesomesauce and is only getting better, but I'm not paying $360 a year for it.

Like I said, I'd be thrilled to have a Steam-like interface that will allow my $10 a month to use Hulu one at a time on any platform I choose. This could be a great example of the Laffer curve. They can charge $10 a month and generate revenue through the roof or charge a lot more and net a lot less.

depends entirely on content. If hulu doesn't have rock-solid agreements with all the networks and most cable companies, I'm hesitant to buy. and I'm not buying under any kind of long-term contract.

I'd happily pay $100 per month for an all-you-can-eat movie/TV/music service without ads and across all platforms.

You might get a thousand people to agree to that. Compared to a million at $10 a month.

If this also brings movies like NetFlix... I may go for it! Though i'd even be happy with a PSN subscription service of some type as well for that matter.

And you can get HULU to work on your PS3 if you set up a proxy server (never took the time though to do it) - i'm also waiting for a new browser for the PS3. cause it sucks.

    Deal struck it appears:
'Hulu Plus' Coming To PlayStation 3 In July, Xbox 360 In 2011

but i'm sorry. NetFlix will win over on this one. no mention of movies - yet at least. they're in the beginning stages of it so hopefully it'll grow to include all that goodness and then some! but yeah. with Ad's i'd have to pass.
