from old reading and what i can remember about them, the reason for MS switch from Nvidia to ATi was the legal trouble the two went through over the royalties or something about the chip in the xbox... the x850 might get better numbers, but without shader 3 support i think nvidia will start to seperate itself a little in what gamers see. i think the framerates any of the high end cards since late last year are fast enough for any game out there. As for the shortages, i don't know who to blame since xbox and PS2s were scarce during the holidays.. the gamecube was fine since they had enough to meet supply (not really a good thing knowing that they did stop production for some time last year to get stock sold and not have too many made and not sold on the big Ns hands). I just hope the price of the PSP isn't a glimpse into what we can expect from the next gen systems... speculation from 500-700 makes my head spin.

nVidia and Microsoft parted ways because MS tried to lower the price it was paying nVidia for GPUs because of lowered costs associated with the manufacturing of the chips, despite the price that was supposedly guarenteed in the contracts between the two companies.

It is a derivative of the r600 core even though it will be called the r500. It does not mean it will be inferior to ATI's upcoming r520 due out this May.
The R520 is what is in the Xbox Next( or whatever they call the thing), and it is a derivative of the R600 which is the next big desktop chip.

I subscribe to a couple magazines and im the ps2 magazine they showed screenshots from the beta test of the new ps3 graphics card and i have to say i was definitely impressed. It should look very good if they can keep the games running at around 60-70 fps and support HDTV and widescreen.

Panzor.. Actually the r520 is due out this may/june. The r600 is due late 2006, while the next Xbox, Xenon etc will have the R500, which is a derivative of the r600. The R500 will be more advanced than the r520.

I read somewhere that MS and Nvidia were in disagreement when they were planning on the next GPU for Xbox 2 and hence, MS went to ATI.

MS and Nvidia had legal disagreements over price of the chip in the current Xbox i think that is why MS went to ATi(MS wanted to pay lower after the contract was already signed i think)
