The beginning street shots of SNL this year are all done with Canon DSLR cameras shooting HD. This is the future. Serious filmmakers are abandoning even high end camcorders in favor of the DSLR. The control over Depth of Field, which this video illustrates, makes the DSLR a clear winner. Then, factoring in the MASSIVE selection of high end lenses, makes Canon the superior choice.
Oddly, I've barely touched the HD video on my Canon. It's something I'm going to have to explore sometime soon.
All this has happened before and will all happen again.

I was talking to a buddy who's an engineer at a local TV station and I mentioned that I carry my camera everywhere, so if there was anything even remotely news-worthy, I could take the picture. He said you're better off flipping over to HD video and recording it. The quality is there and local TV is happy to pay for the video. And if it's really newsworthy, and of national interest, the networks can pick it up and pay even more.
All this has happened before and will all happen again.

That's awesome. Yeah the thing can capture video at pretty much the highest available quality, so why not? Local news shows some really terrible quality homemade video, so I imagine they'd love to have some HD shots without traveling to the site of interest.
In a Canon, IS is a function of the lens no matter what you're doing... pictures, video mode... or just looking at LiveView. It's either on or off. Just to be sure, I zoomed in at 300mm, handheld, and went to 1080p, zoomed in on the Live View screen and turned the IS on and off. It's extremely apparent it's doing it's job.
All this has happened before and will all happen again.
