This is just a personal opinion, but I think HP is leading Dell because Dell is still priced too high. But it's just my opinion... I have a known bias towards HP schtuff.

That was a good read Craig. I've been wanting to read up on the XPS's to see if they were as good as they say. They seem to be pretty good but a bit on the pricey side like DC said. I don't like Dell but that's just me, I think they rape people of cash who don't know a thing about computers.

My co-worker was looking for a new lappy to use for work (solidworks and similar programs) and after reviewing the XPS he decided to get a MacBook Pro with windows on the side (didn't get parallel cause he doesn't need to run em both together).

Real PC enthusiasts build their own, but Dell is a decent alternative.

I don't like their choice of motherboards and RAM. obviously the CPUs are going to be genuine. Also, the fan/sink on the CPU can be lacking.

the laptops might be better, I've never owned a Dell notebook.

A year or so ago their XPS's used to come loaded to the bone with unnecessary software. [H]ardOCP did a review on one system, which kept crashing during testing due to all the bloatware. After the article and the uproar, Dell started shipping the XPS's with the option to not have preloaded software. Which is a great step forward.

They seem to listen to their users opinions quite a bit, but sometimes seem to shy just a little away from what they really want.

The XPS's are too expensive and don't pack the punch of a cheaper alternative or a homebuilt in my opinion.

99% of gamers don't build their own rigs. This is a fact and it's the reason prebuilt rigs are so expensive. They're a business. They are charging those prices to cover markups on parts, labor, and average repair costs under warranty. Plus various markups along the way.

I pulled them right out of my ass... sure you still want to see?
But seriously, I have seen numbers that 78% of "pc gamers" were women who did casual gaming with lots of word games, online card games, etc... nothing really more graphically intensive than The Sims. Hard core gamers are almost exclusively guys who still used stock-grade over the counter PCs. Then comes the ones who upgrade the retail rigs, then are the ones who buy dedicated gaming rigs, and lastly are the power users who build their own from scratch. I have seen the numbers, and they're a statistically rarity in the big picture of gaming PCs.
