    Pretty sure it's either 10.5:1 or a little higher. You can get them to run fine with lower octane gas, but the computer pulls back ignition timing so you lose bother horsepower and mileage.

    I wonder if the mileage is significantly less to where it would be more costly or not.

    Higher octane gas is harder to combust. It can actually cause drivability issues in extremely cold weather if the engine's not designed for it. If you're not pinging on 87, and your computer's not backing off timing, higher octane gas will give no benefit. All a computer can do is lower timing advance, it can't increase it... meaning no power increase with just higher than recommended octane alone.

    My car runs better in summer with higher octane fuel. I get knocking during the summer with lower octanes. Had that happen with both cars.

    Carbon buildup in the combustion chamber, It effectively raises your compression requiring higher octane fuels. A good fuel system cleaning can knock some of that down.

    You know, I always thought I knew "knocking" when I heard it but now that i'm thinking about it... i'm not 100% sure. is knocking more like... stuttering (like knocking noise out of the exhaust..not steady idle?) or actual knocking from the engine and the pistons and such?

    carbon build up? The car only had 1k miles on it when it when summer hit, then it started doing that.
