The next day, a Chinese Y-12 maritime surveillance aircraft conducted 12 fly-bys of Victorious at an altitude of about 400 feet and a range of 500 yards.

_On Thursday, a Chinese frigate approached USNS Impeccable without warning and crossed its bow at a close range of approximately 100 yards, the Pentagon said. This was followed less than two hours later by a Chinese Y-12 aircraft conducting 11 fly-bys of Impeccable at an altitude of 600 feet and a range from 100-300 feet.

_On Saturday, a Chinese intelligence collection ship challenged USNS Impeccable over bridge-to-bridge radio, calling her operations illegal and directing Impeccable to leave the area or "suffer the consequences."

yeah...just bating and what not I guess. They are unarmed ships though, I wonder if they are gonna send in a ship or two. I thought there already would be to protect, Surveillance ships...although maybe it would give them away.

Weird though even on the US side. 2/5 Surveillance ships part of a 25 Ship Special Mission Ships Program are by China?

just because the ship itself doesn't have any weapons doesn't mean the crew doesn't.

I just find it odd there isn't an armed escort for these ships. They seem pretty important. Maybe they weren't worried because there are subs under, and well, they could just blow the ships out of the water, literally.

Most ships these days don't require an escort. You can bet important ships like the one mentioned above are never far from a battle group and considering Tomahawk missiles fly at almost 600 MPH anyone foolish enough to attack such a ship would be obliterated in short order.
