It seems to me that the point wasn't that we "abandon" Israel, but that someone needs to step in, and as long as no one is truly invested in the region (aside, of course, from Israel and Palestine) we're all content to just pick a side and shout "Go team!"

Now, before you all go completely missing my point, I'm not suggesting we should abandon Israel and support Palestine.
The region is locked in a struggle that WILL NOT END no matter how much support we give Israel. Short of outside intervention, the bloodshed in Israel and Palestine will go on for decades [if we're lucky]. Not as an invading force, but as a mediator. I hesitate to use the word 'peacekeeper', but it applies (in the literal sense and not the UN sense).

I don't want to intervene with Israel any more than I want them to intervene on our soil.

They get constant rocket attack into civilian areas on a daily basis. Why do people never seem to reference that when they say Israel should lay down and embrace the Palestinians? Can lions and gazelles put their differences aside and start a family?

Up until the last 50 days, America has stood by her friends. UK, Israel... now, we seem to be very happy to piss away long standing friendships.

Their war is not against the Palestinians. It is against Hamas.

Oh of course! The socialization of our nation's economy... BUSH. Tax hikes... BUSH. Retarded political moves alienating everyone who still supports us... BUSH. Giving money to groups that you KNOW will end up putting $ in the hands of terrorists... BUSH.

Yup, I still have HOPE in Obama! Yeah go Obama! You can do no wrong!

    :yeahthat:

This is completely on Obama. I think abandoning Israel is a bad decision, but is not unprecedented.

Obama made conditions to Hamas negotiations BTW, including complete renunciation of terrorism/any anti-civilian violence as well as recognition of the state of Israel. Don't expect those negotiations to happen unless Hamas suddenly gains some kind of morals.

I genuinely believe he will continue to support Israel, and if Hamas renounces violence to negotiate (fat chance ), it could be the best thing to happen for both Israel and Palestine.
Israel already pays for and supports the Palestinians, this is just an extra $900 million. Don't forget, they provide all utilities (power, water, etc) to Palestine as well. This isn't some revelation, they've been doing it all along. They don't fucking care, at least most of them don't. They hate Israel. They hate what it stands for. They hate what happened to them (being forced out of their lands by their own people), and they blame it on Israel.

Oh, and as far as US-Israel relations are concerned, what about all the technology from Israel? There is a reason why so much major R&D is done there. They also provide coastal access in the region, and are located in the center of the Old World.

Obama, in his "effort" to revitalize old relationships or build new ones, has steamrolled (maybe with precision) over our strongest ones. The old friends who stuck with us through thick and thin. If we keep alienating them like this, we will be in trouble. Although, I guess the socialist state of The People's Republic for the United States of Russia has a certain "ring" to it.
