Unions are never 'partners'. they are adversaries. they will suck the very company that employs them dry, then go on strike to complain about how bad off they are at $55/hr and not contributing to the cost of health care.

death rattle countdown is in effect.

oh, and teachers are striking in Washington. that's reasonable.

Another union story. Funny how their situation is reflecting the gov't. They're running out of cash so they have to dip into the strike cash pool to pay for their expenses. They have assets of over $1B, but about 3/4 is tied into that strike fund. And mentioned is that if things continue as they have, the UAW has 3-5 years before they hit a budget crunch. Basically, unless the UAW can organize the foreign automakers they're going to be in big trouble real soon.

One thing I did find funny is that their clerical workers are represented by another union. AND they had to get those workers to agree to concessions like pay cuts and paying for their healthcare.
It's a long article, but a decent read.

LaHood told reporters Tuesday that his department isn't trying to protect the maker of the Chevrolet Volt, General Motors, from possible repercussions from the government's safety investigation.

LaHood says his department isn't in the business of protecting the automobile industry.
Yeah, they're not into that. they would rather round up the lynch mob for Toyota.

Even if that were true (it's not), there will always be a hint of impropriety because Obama illegally changed bankruptcy law and paid off the unions and his administration with an ownership stake before paying off bondholders. So, the Obama administration has a vested interest in GM succeeding. And especially with their half-assed green energy pipe dreams.

It is patriotic to own one of those cars. You will be unable to drive, so that will free up traffic congestion and further reduce pollution. In fact, let me re-calibrate here, that is the ultimate green car.

That's probably the worst thing anyone in the admin could have said.

I still think the tech in the Volt is pretty amazing. An evolutionary dead-end, but still pretty cool.
